Top Melbourne Cup Tips

Seasoned punters will be keeping a close eye on the runners and riders of the Melbourne Cup’s 24 horse field in the lead-up to the race. But if you’re an occasional bettor, then you’ll find our tips for the Melbourne Cup could come in handy when deciding which horse or horses to back.

No-one can say for certain who will the Melbourne Cup in 2022, but by checking out the following tips, you can make an educated guess. Then it’s just down to the horses and jockeys on the day, and the excitement as you urge your horse on!

Check out the form in lead up races

There are a number of races in the lead up to the Melbourne Cup which will give you an idea as to the performance of the horses. Nobody wants them to peak too soon, but a good showing is thought to be an indicator of a good performance in the Melbourne Cup.

Traditionally, the Caulfield Cup was regarded as the best lead-up form race. However, the last 12 years has shown only one Melbourne Cup winner has contested the Caulfield Cup.  Where performance has shown to have bearing is in the Turnbull Stakes and Cox Plate. Of course, you’ve got to take into account international form for the horses coming from overseas.

Since 2000, there have been 10 Melbourne Cup Winners from the top lead-up races:

Caulfield Cup – 5 winners

Cox Plate – 5 winners

Smokin’ Romans took the win at the 2022 Turnbull Stakes, so it’s worth keeping an eye on that entrant.

In the last three years, the Melbourne Cup winners have all placed at one of the three key lead-up races, or an international.

Year Horse Lead-up form
2021 Verry Elleegant Turnbull Stakes (2000m) – 4th into Cox Plate (2040m) – 3rd
2020 Twilight Payment Irish St Leger (2816m) – 3rd (International Race)
2019 Vow And Declare Turnbull Stakes (2000m) – 4th into Caulfield Cup (2400m) – 2nd

Top trainers for previous Melbourne Cups

Certain trainers do well at Flemington and their results with different horses shows. When picking which horse to back, give consideration to the trainer and their success at the Melbourne Cup.

The o’Briens have done well in recent years with Joseph o’Brien training the 2017 and 2020 winners, Rekindling and Twilight Payment. Danny o’Brien trained the 2019 winner Vow and Declare. He’s also the trainer of Young Werther which could account for the gelding’s fairly good odds.

Look beyond the favourites

Favourites are named that for a reason. However, that doesn’t mean they’re guaranteed to be first past the post. In fact, only one in every five favourites has actually clinched the win. Outsider picks are a good bet, especially as the pay out is a lot higher than the favourite.

Over the 156 years the Melbourne Cup has been run, 34 favourites have won with 75 of them being placed in the top three.

The last ten years shows only 3 favourites have placed:

Year Favourite Odds Finish
2021 Incentivise $2.90 2nd
2020 Surprise Baby $6.00 13th
2019 Finche $6.00 7th
2018 Yucatan $6.00 11th
2017 Marmelo $8.50 9th
2016 Hartnell $5.50 3rd
2015 Fame Game $5 13th
2014 Admire Rakti   $5.50 22nd
2013 Fiorente $7 1st
2012 Dunaden $7 14th
